biography
Esteban Lisa was born in Hinojosa de San Vicente (Castilla –La Mancha,Toledo, Spain) in 1895 and died in Buenos Aires in 1983 having emigrated to Argentina at the age of twelve.
As a painter he was highly reclusive, never exhibiting nor selling his work. He taught art at a night school in a poor district of Buenos Aires to European, Jewish and Arab immigrants.
Along with TorresGarcia, Lisa is considered one of the first Latin American abstract artists and a forerunner of the gestural abstract art and Informalism which would be developed by the CoBRA group and others after World War II.
His work has been exhibited in many museums, cultural institutions, art fairs and galleries throughout the world. Lisa could be described as the first Spanish abstract artist. In parallel to his activities as a painter, he was also active as a theoreticalwriter on art and as a teacher.
In 1955 he founded the Modern Art School Las Cuatro Dimensiones and published the book Kant, Einstein and Picasso.
